Welcome to Blackbird Studio
Blackbird Studio is the latest evolution of The NEST Project and the creative home of artist Debbie Baxter.
Located in Portland's historic Ford Building, Blackbird is a working artist's studio where photography, installation, exhibitions, intimate performances, and community come together. It is both the place where new bodies of work are created and a space where artists, musicians, writers, and neighbors gather to experience them.
Today, Blackbird is home to The Natural Order of Things, an evolving body of photographic work exploring identity, embodiment, and our relationship with the living world. Alongside Debbie's fine art practice, the studio hosts portrait sessions, Blackbird Sessions, exhibitions, workshops, and creative collaborations throughout the year.

I photograph artists, authors, musicians, families and individuals with the same attention I bring to my fine-art practice — creating portraits that hold something of who you are, not simply what you look like.
Each session is an opportunity to slow down, connect, and make photographs that feel honest, artful and enduring.

Blackbird Sessions
Blackbird Sessions is an intimate listening-room concert series at Blackbird Studio, bringing extraordinary musicians into the space for evenings that feel close, personal and alive.
With only about 60 guests, there is no big stage and no distance between artist and audience. Just musicians, a room, and the experience of listening together.

About the evening
I met Making Movies at the Oregon Country Fair this summer and was immediately drawn to their music, their energy, and the way they connect with an audience.
Earlier in the day, I’ll photograph the band at Blackbird for their upcoming album. That evening, the studio will transform into an intimate listening room for the very first Blackbird Session.

Blackbird Studio welcomes tattoo artist Stephen Graves.
During his residency, Stephen will bring his distinctive tattoo practice into Blackbird, creating work in conversation with the studio, the NEST installation, and Debbie Baxter’s portrait photography.
Stephen will be available for select tattoo appointments throughout the residency, along with a special collaborative offering combining tattoo and portraiture.
